Eight miles and growing , the Salida Mountain Trails system is across the Arkansas River from town. Salida is already a very bike friendly community, with lots of bike paths, quiet roads and bike racks.
Sponsored by local bike shop Absolute Bikes, and built mostly by hand by volunteers, the Salida Mountain Trails non-profit started building the Arkansas Hills Trail System. Build on the ski slope model, there are easier trails close in with more challenging trails further out. Great signs make navigation easy and clear.
The popular “Frontside” trail winds its way up the front of Tenderfoot Mountain, with great views of Salida the Sawatch Range. Accessible from downtown, it makes a great family ride or hike.
“They have done tremendous work,” said Gillis. “I can look out the back of the bike shop on a summer day now and see more riders in one afternoon than I did in the first year I lived here.”
